Every year, the locals gear up toward one of the most spectacular festivals you will ever witness. They start with a procession by carrying a picture of the Madonna. When it is noon time, they walk through Matera with a statue of Madonna dellaBruna placed on a wagon made with paper-mache. The wagon usually drawn by mules is followed by the high ranking church officials who include the Knights Della Bruna, the clergy and the Archbishop, all clad in iron armor. At the end of the procession, the locals stop the paper-mache wagon at the Vittorio Vento Square. The locals tear up the wagon and take the torn pieces to their houses. It is believed that the torn pieces are good luck charms. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
