The woods of the Gran Paradiso National Park which are mainly deciduous and coniferous serve as shelter to numerous animals. They also serve as barriers against avalanches, landslides, and flooding. The thick, dense foliage of the forests permit little entrance of light into the forests, especially in summer months.
