Acireale Cathedral was built in honor of two saints who were the patrons. The first saint is Saint Sebastian, a martyr who is very popular among sportsmen. The other patron is Saint Venera, a 2nd-century saint who was believed to have survived after been boiled in very hot oil. Saint Venera also survived to wear a hot helmet on her head, crucifixion and having a huge sandstone placed on her chest. Her breasts were cut off by a vicious ruler which to this dismay of her enemies, she survived. The female martyr ended up converting all her abductors to Christianity.
