The present building of the basilica was constructed above the ruins of an ancient church which was named a cathedral by Pope Leo I in the 5th century. However, what stands currently is a completely new structure which was built as a result of the aftermath of multiple earthquakes and fire attacks. The most intense attack occurred in 1980, which lead to the destruction and closure of the old building. 9 years later, a newly reconstructed church was reopened to the public for worship.
