During the Middle Ages, the town of Sovana experienced a boom in economy, architecture, and public life. Under the rule of Counts Aldobrandeschi, many developmental projects were established and concluded, especially between the 11th and 12th centuries. Pope Gregory VII was born in Sovana to a professional blacksmith, and after which he helped to reform the church system and was part of the conflict issues between Popes and Emperors.
