Here are 5 interesting this you should know about Ortona before you paid a visit. In 1943, two battalions of elite German and assaulting Canadian troops fought to a standstill in a bloody battle known as the Battle of Ortona. It was part of the Italian army’s agenda to liberate Ortona, and it resulted in over 500 deaths on the Canadian side. Eventually, the town was liberated, but thousands of soldiers had to be evacuated due to illness and battle exhaustion. You can visit the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery to pay homage to the heroes.
