Nymans garden was established in the 19th century by three generations of the Messel family. The gardens became renowned through one of the members of the family called Ludwig Ernest Wilhelm Leonard Messel. History has it that Ludwig settled in England and bought the Nymans estate which he later transformed into a place for family life and entertainment, with an Arts and Crafts-inspired garden room. Although the garden was opened to the public in the 1930s, it suffered much damage in the great storm of October 1987. The incident led to the loss of 486 mature trees and many of the shrubs.
