The name ‘Etna’ means ‘I burn.’ The moniker was coined from the Greed word, Aitne which means to burn. According to Greek mythology, Aitna was the goddess who controlled volcano. Aitna was the offspring of the Greek god of heaven, Ouranos and the Greek goddess of the earth, Ge. Legend also has it that Typhon, one hundred-headed creature was buried beneath the mountain.
