This small town in the Scottish Borders is a delight for many visitors because of the fun and adventure it promises. Many people have termed it a place with undiscovered attractions where there is so much for people to explore. Before you visit, here are the interesting facts about Melrose that will inspire you. The history of Melrose is written all over this cathedral that has been in existence since 1136. It was established by the Cistercian monks at the request of King David I of Scotland. Over the years, the church has played major roles in the history of the local people and entire Scotland. The monastery is known for many interesting artistic values like carved decorative details, including likenesses of saints, dragons, gargoyles, and plants. One of the most exciting aspects of the monastery is the engraving of the abbey by James Fittler in Scotia Depicta, published 1804. Melrose Abbey is also the burial place of 13 important people including Jocelin (Bishop of Glasgow), Waltheof of Melrose, William de Bondington – Bishop of Glasgow, and William Douglas, Lord of Liddesdale.
