One of the most important architectural structures in the whole of Abruzzo. Santa Maria Maggiore offers visitors an incredible opportunity to experience history, culture, and architectural genius at its finest. Legends have it that the church was built on top of a pagan temple in honor of the God Apollo. The church is considered one of the most important monuments of Abruzzo and Italy. In the exterior, there is the main façade, with staircase, gates, and round arch bordered by twisted columns. There is also the sixteenth-century façade, the Romanesque façade, and the bell tower. Interior of the building likewise is fascinating with the ancient medieval structure. Near the altar, you’ll find the most important artworks like the Crucifix by Nicola da Guardiagrele, made in 1422. Other artworks are also there waiting for you to explore.
