Neanderthals are a subspecies of humans who lived over a hundred years ago. Even though they’re extinct, evidence of their existence can still be found across Europe, one of which is the Gorham’s Cave Complex. Here scientists have discovered several archeological deposits that revealed their existence and provided clues as to how they lived their lives. Generally, the place is regarded as the last refuge for the Neanderthals who disappeared about 32,000 years ago.

While he was opening the fissure at the rear of a sea cavern, Captain A. Gorham discovered the cave in 1907. The cave was named after him. Unfortunately, after the discovery, the cave was left unattended to because the world hasn’t known its historical importance yet. Many years later, when archeologists discovered that the place was home to Neanderthals, it quickly began to gain recognition. Also, it was discovered after excavations that the place has a huge significance to the evolution of the human race.

Since November 2010, the authorities in charge of the Gorham’s Cave Complex have been fighting to get it recognized as a World Heritage Site. After much persuasion, their wish was finally granted when in July 2016 it was finally named.
