Some historians believe that the island was named after the daughter of Inopion, Chiona. Inopion was the first king of the island who migrated from Crete. Others believe that the island was named after ‘Hios,’ Neptune’s son. The third group of historians has it that the island was named after the Phoenician word for ‘Mastic’.
