English occultist, poet, writer, and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley lived in Cefalu for about three years, from 1920 to 1923. He would perhaps have stayed longer if Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini didn’t send him packing. During those years he accomplished several things including founding the Abbey of Thelema.
