Another exciting place to spend your time when you’re at Avezzano is the Tunnels of Claudius. Located at the southern part of the city, the tunnels were built by the emperor Claudius between 41 and 52 AD. The tunnel was created as a huge drain pipe for Lake Fucino, using 25,000 slaves who dug 32 wells. Even though the lake as drained, abandoning it after the fall of the Roman Empire it fell back to its former levels. Alessandro Torlonia, an Italian nobleman, came and completed the work by converting the land under the great lake into a fertile plain. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
