Historians have suggested that the town of Atri got its name from Emperor Publio Helium Adriano. Due to the emperor interest in the place, it grew to become a very important commercial destination for a very long period of time. The Greek geographer Strabo talks about the presence of maritime harbor where trade flourished and serving as a boiling point for Mediterranean culture.
