There was a terrible struggle for power, between the empire and the papacy, during the latter part of the year 1100. Atrani sided with the pope which eventually lost. As a punishment, Manfredi, the last king of Sicily sent 1000 Alexandrian sailors against Atrani, and the people fled to Amalfi and didn’t return until many years later when the soldiers abandoned the city.
