2Santa Maria Maggiore

While Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the most revered, Santa Maria Maggiore is regarded as the oldest church in the town. The church was built in the 11th-12th centuries, on top a pre-existing Palaeo-Christian church. It’s a beauty to behold, especially for the architecture that includes an entrance door that is surmounted by an ogival arch and a rose window. Within the walls of the church, you’ll find nave and two aisles separated by pillars, fresco remains and paintings of the 14th-15th centuries, etc. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the works of Tiberio d’Assisi and Pace di Bartolo, two significant artists of that age.
