4The King’s Pool

In the year 1086, when the Domesday Book was written, the wide artificial lake known as the King’s Pool and a water-filled moat had surrounded York Castle. The King’s pool was sustained from the river Foss by a dam which was built to feed the lake. Several properties involving two watermills were destroyed to create a path for the water defenses.
