8Motte and Bailey Castles
Source: Link
Initially, the castle was made up of two circular timber motte & bailey castles built in the year 1068. One of the Castle, Clifford’s Tower, was originally built in wood on a 60 ft high Motte and was later replaced in stone between the years 1245 and 1270 with a shell keep that was protected by a stone curtain wall bordered with towers. The castle was destroyed during the civil war after which it was rebuilt. In the year 1684, it was damaged by fire but was attended to in the 19th century. Some parts of the curtain wall still remain and the castle offers a nice sightseeing spot. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
