The first shrine on the site which was dedicated to then Goddess Sulis was built by the Celts. When the Romans invaded Britain, they identified Sulis and likened it to the Roman goddess Minerva. That is how the town got its ancient Roman name ‘Aquae Sulis,’ which means ‘the waters of Sulis.’
