The name ‘Marathon race’ means a long race. It originated in Athens after Greek soldier in 490BC, Philippides broke into a race from Marathon to Athens to inform the Athenians about their defeat of the Persians. Philippides was initially sent to run to Sparta by Athenian generals because they need support. He ran for 36 hours over a 180-mile journey. Upon arrival at Sparta, the Spartans gave Athens a condition for participation in the Persian war; he ran another 180 miles back to Athens to inform them of Sparta’s decision which did not favor the Athenians. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
