So many world heritage sites and monuments were at risk during the Second World War, and Santa Maria Delle Grazie is not an exception. On August 15, 1943, allied planes bombarded the church and convent which lead to the damage of most of the refectory. Luckily, the part where the painting is situated was not affected.
