Back in the 15th century, Genoa, under which Portofino is, was controlled by Charles VI, king of France. In 1409, the monarch sold the place to the Republic of Florence. However, after the French were chased away from Genoa, the Florentines returned it. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
