It’s common to have stories of heroism wherever there is a disaster. One of the written accounts of the events of the AD 79 volcanic eruption was from the letter of a man known as Pliny the younger. He wrote about his uncle, Pliny the Elder and how he died in the disaster while trying to rescue other people. Pliny the younger, witnessed the event firsthand, from a safe distance.
