8The Chosen Area of the Cathedral

The cathedral was built outside the early medieval walls of Pisa, to indicate that Pisa wasn’t scared of being attacked. It used to be renowned in the Mediterranean area as one of the most influential cities. The area that was chosen for the erection of the cathedral had already been used as a necropolis in the Lombard era. At the start of the eleventh century, a church had also been built on the site of the current cathedral.
