In the 16th century, the Turks were at the top of their military might and were attacking villages, towns, and other small communities all over the coastlines of Europe. Manarola and the other Cinque Terre villages were not spared, and they stand a great risk of being attacked and destroyed. To avoid catastrophe, they had to build new defense systems by reinforcing old towers and forts.
