London Bridge was built with about 19 arches which helped in solidifying the structure and ensuring that it remains properly grounded. The arches also create a form of beauty for the bridge. The drawbridge was added to the structure so that it can be lifted to allow ships to pass through. In 1768 buildings on the bridge was taken down and large central arch constructed to allow ships to pass under. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
