Tangata Manu means birdman. The birdmen play a significant function in the island’s history. The birdman was the winner of a competition on Easter Island. The ritual was organized to collect the first laid manu tara (egg) at Motu Nui. The participants are expected to swim back to the island, climb a cliff to Rano Kau and reach the peak of a village called Orongo. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
