Basilica of San Vitale was commissioned by a rich man called Julianus Argentarius in the 6th century. He built it as a testament to the glory of Jesus Christ and himself and his wife. It was dedicated to the martyr Vitalis, the patron saint of Ravenna. Julianus was not very known, but he was said to be a private banker and architect, or royal envoy.
