In the 1930s, archeologist Alexander Keiller discovered the bones of a man under one of the stones, which is now known as the Barber Stone. The bones are said to belong to a barber because of the barber-surgeon tools found on him. Keiller suggested the stone must have fallen on the man while he was trying to bury it.
