King Henry was murdered at this Cathedral by monks who believed he played a role in the death of Archbishop, Thomas Beckett whom he had earlier appointed. A dispute between them erupted, and this caused King Henry to retaliate by sending his men to kill the bishop. This gruesome act of murder in the Cathedral sparked an outrage which led to the killing of King Henry at same Cathedral when he came to plead for forgiveness.
