History has it that a first church was built in honor of Saint Peter in the 12th century under the watch of Pope Alexander III. Over time, the short became too small, and it was later demolished in the 13th century. Some historians believe it was demolished for political reasons rather than its small size. Due to the demolition, the bishop was granted permission by the French General to increase a church, the church of St. Mark to the level of a cathedral. The church of St. Mark was built in the 13th century for the Dominicans. After the St. Mark’s church was upgraded, it was renamed the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Mark. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
