The modern day Olympics is a far cry from what it used to be in those days. The first Olympic Games started in the 8th century and the only sporting activity that was carried out was racing. The sprint was spanned just 200 meters. Hundreds of thousands of Greeks trooped to watch the Olympic Games in a stadium that could accommodate about 50,000 persons. The Olympic Games did not stop during the wars. The Greeks and other nations they were at war with were made to call a truce during the Olympics so that their spectators and sportsmen could participate in the games. Winners of the Olympic Games were either given olive wreaths, coins or jars of olive oil. There were no medals. Click the next ARROW to see the next photo!
